Rajkot, February 1 The Rajkot police have detained the in-laws of a woman whose body was found in the Bhadar canal on January 30, six days after she went missing.

A post-mortem revealed injury marks on the head of Sangita Rathod (30), which led the police to believe that the death was a murder case, rather than a suicide.

The Malaviyanagar police have arrested Sangita's husband Alpesh, father-in-law Nandabhai, mother-in-law Kanchanben, brother-in-law Paresh and sister-in-law Harsha, following a complaint by her father, Vrujlal Chavda (58). The accused are residents of Prajapatinagar on Morbi Road in Rajkot.

According to the police, Sangita went missing on January 24. Chavda said in his complaint that his daughter, along with her in-laws had come to his residence in Jetpur town to attend Sangita's sister marriage. While the rest of the family came back to Rajkot, Sangita decided to stay back at her parent's place for a couple of days. Alpesh called her back to Rajkot on January 23. Chavda has alleged that Alpesh and his family members killed Sangita on January 24 and dumped her into a nearby canal.

The police said, the accused told during interrogation that Sangita committed suicide a day after coming back from her parents’ house, while fetching some firewood.

They said, on January 28, Alpesh registered a missing complaint with the Malaviyanagar Police Station. Her photograph was also published in a vernacular paper on January 29. Next day, her body was found, which hinted at a foul play.
