Chandigarh, January 4 Members of Indian National Students Organisation (INSO) held a protest in the Sector 14 market in PU on Friday. They were protesting the alleged monopoly by the shopkeepers. They alleged that some shopkeepers even charged ‘higher prices’ from the students.

The members alleged that the shops are not rented out at prevailing market rates. They claimed that if the shops were leased out on market rates, the varsity could avoid the annual fee hike.

INSO State President Vikas Rathee, student council General Secretary Sunny Bhardwaj and INSO Campus President Deepak Hooda had conducted a survey of the university market on Thursday.

Rathee said that the shop owners were paying only Rs 10,000-15,000 as rent. He said that no uniform parameters exist to renew the rent structure of the shops. He said that the authorities must allow big corporations such as Reliance, Subiksha and Cafe Coffee Day to set up shops in the varsity campus.Bhardwaj alleged that the university market does not have any mechanism to control prices, no provision of providing receipts for purchases and no discounts are available on books. Deepak Hooda announced that INSO will launch a campaign against the fraud. The Dean Students Welfare Prof Naval Kishore said the problems will be sorted out soon.
