New Delhi Though there was an increase of Rs 1,600 in the Budget, sources say the Commonwealth Games projects will need much more

Monday’s Interim Budget has allocated the Capital Rs 2,418 crore, a jump of Rs 1,600 crore from last year. But for the government, struggling to complete its projects for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the amount might still not be enough.

Faced with severe fund shortage, the government had even approached the Urban Development Ministry for additional funds. The projected loss to the Capital’s coffers is nearly Rs 1,300 crore as the revenue collection has decreased 12 per cent.

An amount of Rs 1,000 crore has been earmarked for the Commonwealth Games infrastructure, but the cost of its many projects is much higher. With the deadline for completion approaching, the Delhi government is beginning to feel the pinch.

The government will get Rs 1,045 crore under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Rural Mission, JNNURM, which is a bonus compared to last year’s Rs 400 crore. Till now however, only the low-cost housing project under Rajiv Awas Yojna has been approved by JNNURM.

“We need to get immediate approval for various JNNURM schemes. In case projects are not cleared, the amount could be transferred for the Commonwealth Games,” said Finance Minister, Dr A K Walia.

The JNNURM fund includes an amount of Rs 478.52 crore for submissions on urban infrastructure and governance. In the last budget, only Rs 50 crore had been allocated under this head. For urban infrastructure development in small towns, Rs 274.37 crore and Rs 199 crore for submissions on basic services to the urban poor have been approved. The JNNURM fund also includes Rs 93.12 crore for integrated housing and slum development.

Apart from this, Rs 20.16 crore has been allocated for the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna and Rs 199.62 crore under the Normal Central Assistance. But the Centre has reduced investment in the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation from Rs 1,388 crore to Rs 1,236 crore this year. The resources of DMRC have gone down from Rs 2,152.73 to Rs 1,567.15 crore.

In store for the Commonwealth Games
* Flyovers and Bridges Rs 5700 cr
* Augmentation of the DTC fleetRs 1518 cr
* Stadiums Rs 650 cr
* Metro Connectivity Rs 16887 cr
* New Power Generation Plants Rs 35000 cr
* Water Supply Rs 950 cr

Allocation of funds to Indian capital and not to Maharastra by Sooraj lal on 17 Feb 2009

To remind all I would like to say that Delhi is the capital of India and organizing common wealt game is not a joke. If Maharastrians can organize such an event, then I think Indian government should also give money to Maharastra government. But now since Delhi is going to be the host so allocation of funds is necessary for the infrastructure development there rather than giving it to Maharastra that is already running a proxy war to get parted from India.

Migrants ruin every plan of Delhi government by Deepak Kashyap on 17 Feb 2009

Please for God sake first put a curb over the migrant population that is spoilling the every project whatever Delhi government brings for Delhiites or else if you can't keep a check then please don't allocate any fund at all because these facilities meant for Delhiites are indeed proving to be the attraction for the migrants and results on over crowded city roads and increase in crime graph.

LOOT CONTINUES! by Rajan Shete on 17 Feb 2009

As usual, these Gaznis and Ghoris of Delhi have money for Delhi, even in these 'hard times', but Mumbai, the income generator for the whole country, once again gets the 'royal neglect'! And they have the temerity to castigate Raj Thakeray! Hypocrisy Zindabaad!

To Rajan Shete contd by Manoj Sharma on 18 Feb 2009

so you think national leaders are Gaznis and a lawless Rogue like Raj Thackrey is great Leader ??? you think Mumbai is anything without migrants doing business in India , the Hindi Film industry is made up of 90% people from North , similarly in business there are Marwaris, Punjabis..and Gujratis..mumbai is just one part of India no way less or more important than other places.. Delhi is a National Capital and can never be compared like this .

To Rajan Shete by Manoj Sharma on 17 Feb 2009

Delhi is the second biggest economic center in India and generates 18% in Taxes of total collection , so donot talk as if mumbai alone feeds India, we have some of the biggest corporations in India along with 400 medium scale industry, toursim alone generates 15% of total tourism revenue in India. Also all the large projects in India like Metro and Urban infrastructure have been funded by center ,more than 50,000 cr has been allocate and spent on Mumbai , so check your facts before talking like ignorant.
