New Delhi A team of the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University has won the first prize in a formula car design competition held in Melbourne, Australia, in November last year. The team of nine engineering students beat three hundred other teams to win the Cost Event Award. The award was given for the prototype car’s cost efficiency and design.

The IP University team was unique in another way also. It was the only team that had female members.

Varun Jain, captain of the team said it was a “great pleasure to be the first team to win the award”. Called AIOUS, the team comprised third year engineering students from the Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT) and the Maharaja Agarsen Institute of Technology (MAIT).

The team had started preparations a year before the competition. “We got in touch through networking sites and put our heads together to design and manufacture the suspension, brakes and the chassis,” says Tanvi Gupta from IGIT.

According to Gupta, the most difficult part was the inspection of the prototype. “They minutely scrutinised the car; many failed to pass the test,” she says. The prototype car can reach 100 kmph in 5 seconds.
