Ahmedabad An irate mob vandalised a police station in Naranpura and damaged furniture and a police vehicle on Monday.

The incident took place in the afternoon when residents of Naranpura mobbed the police station. Geeta Patel, an MLA from Sabarmati, is accused of leading the mob. A complaint has been registered and some arrests are likely.

The incident is believed to be the fallout of a policeman’s alleged obscene behaviour with the victim of a minor road accident. Harshita Dave, along with her husband, Arjun Dave, a city-based businessman, was passing by Viyaswadi circle in Naranpura on a motorcycle. Arjun lost control of the vehicle allegedly after a speeding Wagon R hit the motorcycle while overtaking. Arjun’s vehicle hit another vehicle, and an altercation ensued.

A sudden commotion was caused and many people gathered at the place. Amid all the commotion, a Naranpura police personnel allegedly tore Harshita’s blouse while trying to stop her from joining the mob. This provoked the mob and some of them allegedly roughed up the personnel. “A mob of around 400 people later barged into the police station and vandalised the place. MLA Geeta Patel was leading the mob,” said Inspector D A Desai of the police station.

Desai, however, dismissed the allegation of misbehaviour with Harshita. “Nothing like this has come up in our preliminary inquiry,” he added
