Ahmedabad, June 27 While the activists are breathing easy now, as the custody of the Patan gangrape victim has been handed over to Manjula Pradeep, noted activist from Navsarjan, there is a sense of deja vu about it.

Anticipation of stronger power-play to dilute justice is slowly gaining momentum across the state, with the twists and turns in the case similar to another trial, that of Zaheera Sheikh.

The All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO) and All India Mahila Sanskritik Sangathan (AIMSS) jointly submitted a memorandum to Governor Naval Kishore Sharma on Friday.

“As the court procedure is coming to a close, the pressure, too, is mounting on the family,” the memorandum said.

It added: “The recent souring of relationship between the father and the daughter is very shocking, which reflects the power the accused lecturers wield on the family of the victim girl.”

The memorandum demanded protection of the witnesses in this case, along with the family, from all kind of pressure through possible allurement and threats apart from all kinds of protection to the victim.

Other people connected with the case have also admitted to the mounting pressure. “I know her father. He is an alcoholic as well as an avaricious man,” said Gemar Chaudhary, president of Patan PTC Parents Association.

“It feels good to see that the girl is now in safe hands, but the pressure is increasing on all of us,” he said.

He further said that with the father of the victim being avaricious, he would be vulnerable to economic pressure, which too, is being exerted significantly.

Manjula, however, appeared happy with the development. “I must say I had total co-operation from the police at all levels, whether it is Patan or Mehsana," she said.

“So far, I have not come across any pressure, and as long as the girl stands strong by her statements, I am sure we will have justice for her,” she added.
