Chandigarh, February 24 A Walk on the 50-metre rubber mat, which had been laid at Sukhna Lake to act as a jogging track, is a pain in the neck, well, literally. Joggers say the track is wobbly and far from comfortable.

According to officials in the administration, the private company which is assigned with laying the track, has covered the 50-metre stretch on a trial basis.

“After Dr Raj Bahadur and a few sportspersons recommended that a track should be laid at the lake, we initiated the move. The initial proposal of laying an Astroturf at the lake was shelved. The rubber track is still an experiment and minor defects or alterations are required. It is too premature a stage to assess its performance,” said UT Chief Engineer S K Jaitely.

The concrete base for the rubber track was prepared by the Chandigarh Administration.

According to officials associated with the project, there are problems in gluing the track to the base. “We wanted to know what kind of problems can arise in laying such a track. So we laid only a 50-metre stretch. Experts will be regularly consulted to make the project a success,” said Jaitely.
