J&K Police, CRPF Jalandhar enter SAFT quarters

Pune Jammu & Kashmir Police scraped past Wilred leisure Club 6-5 in the tiebreak, while CRPF, Jalandhar, defeated Mumbai's Kenkre Academy 2-1 to enter the quarterfinals of the fourth edition of the late Surendra Anand Invitational Football Tournament (SAFT) played at the CAFVD Sports Stadium, Khadki, here.

In the first of the two matches playe between the JK police and the Wilred Leisure team, both teams were locked 0-0 in the first half, with the team from Goa dominating the possession.

In the fourth minute of the second half Manmohan Singh headed a good goal at the end of a pass from Hilal Shah to score the first goal of the match and give J&K Police the lead. Wilred leisure then built the pace and attacked the JK Police half consistently, but missed two opportunities, with Augusto Muniero and Piter Pango faltering at the J&K goal.

However, the Goan team came back to equalise in the last 10 minutes of the match with Ramin Baedo's corner kick put ably into the goal by Agnelo Martin.

The match then went into the tie break with the J&K policemen finding the goal. The Goa team substituted their goal keeper twice in the match but neither of the keepers could stop the oppositions penalties.

The scores went to 5-4 in the tie break with the final kick by Agnelo Martin hitting the pole to give the J&K police passage into the last eight where they take on Pune team CMS Falcon. Two excellent goals scored by Samarjit Singh put CRPF, Jallandar in a winning position against Mumbai's Kenkre Academy. CRPF will now take Pune's Mischief Makers in quarter final round.

Results (Prequarter finals): Jammu Kashmir Police: 6 (Manmohan Singh 2, Hilal Shah, Vishal Bandral, Romesh Verma, Zubir Ahmed, Vishal Bharadwaj 1 each ) bt Wilred Lesure, Goa: 5 (Agnelo Martin, Piter Pango, Piadad Rebello, Romeo Cullaso, Sabi Martin 1 each ) CRPF, Jallandar: 2 (Samarjit Singh 21 and 34 min) bt Kenkre Academy: 1 (Grenville Mazarelo 51 min pass); 2 Yellow cards to Jaswant Rai of CRPF. Tomorrow's fixtures Quarterfinals matches Deccan XI v/s Pune FC: 1.30 pm, Falcon v/s J& K Police : 3.30pm
