Kolkata Former India ODI captain to make his debut as professional golfer today

For cricketers to try a hand at golf is very common nowadays. But this one is different.

Not often do you see a former cricketer turning into a professional golfer. You have to earn a zero handicap to compete in the professional circuit. Ajay Jadeja has achieved that and now he is set to make his debut as a professional golfer here at the Tollygunge Club tomorrow.

The event is Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) Players Championship that will be played from February 3 to 6.

The Rs 30-lakh prize money event is the first leg of this annual series.

A stellar field is waiting to welcome Jadeja. SSP Chowrasia, Mukesh Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Shamim Khan, Rahul Ganapathy, Harendra Gupta, Arjun Singh and Harmeet Kahlon — all will be seen in action.

Tollygunge Club’s magnificent 18-hole course is hosting a professional golf tournament after a gap of eight years.

“We are grateful to the Tollygunge Club for teaming up with us in staging this tournament. The PGTI members are quite excited about playing at one of India’s premier championship venues after a long time. This tournament is a result of our commitment to explore new venues and provide a variety of playing conditions to our professionals,” said PGTI director Padamjit Sandhu.

Tollygunge Club chief executive, air commodore (retd) KB Menon, said: “The initiative will certainly provide a boost for professional golf in Kolkata.”
