Amritsar, January 11 Hans Raj, an inmate of the high-security Amritsar Central Jail, cut off his tongue today allegedly after he was denied soporific drugs to which he was addicted.

A resident of city’s Waryam Singh Colony, Hans Raj has been admitted to the civil hospital for treatment. Jail superintendent S.P. Singh said that Hans Raj, who had been sent here on January 9, was a drug addict and had apparently gone into depression on being unable to access the drugs here. “The act seems to have been committed under depression,” he said. He said the matter would be taken up with the police.
