Lucknow, March 7 With the arrest of a criminal, Shafiq Anwar, after a brief encounter, the Lucknow police claimed to solve the murder of a Sadar-based jeweller.

Sunil Sahu, who was shot dead on the Hassanganj flyover on January 27, was robbed of cash and jewellery as well. The police have recovered the ornaments, a country-made pistol and live artridges from Anwar.

According to police, Anwar confessed to the crime, which he had committed along with his accomplices Syeed Sabeeh and Raj Mandal. The murder was planned by another criminal, Faisal, who according to Anwar, needed money as he was getting married. Apart from Sabeeh, who was booked under the NDPS Act and sent to jail by the Kaiserbagh police about a month ago, the other two accused are still at large and efforts were being made to arrest them.

“During the interrogation, Anwar revealed that the robbery was planned in a hotel in Phoolbagh locality. It was Faisal who arranged for a

Pulsar motorcycle and a country-made pistol. On the day of the incident, Anwar, Mandal and Sabeeh reached the Hassanganj flyover around 7.30 pm, all of them armed. On seeing Sahu, the trio started following him on their motorcycles,” said A K Singh, SP (Rural).

After trailing him for a little while, they overtook Sahu and tried to snatch the bag. When Sahu resisted, Mandal shot him. Sahu succumbed to bullet injuries at CSMMU’s Trauma Centre.

The bag, containing Rs 30,000 cash, was handed over to Anwar and the jewellery was divided among the rest. “Mandal is an expert robber. According to police records, quite a few robberies in the trans-Gomti area are to his credit. Amir is an auto lifter and has been to jail on a number of occasions,” added Singh.

Police said Sahu has also been to jail in 2004, along with Amir and Anwar, on charges of buying stolen jewellery. “Amir and Anwar were involved in murdering and robbing one Rashmi

Aggarwal in 2004. They had sold the jewellery to Sahu,” said Singh.

The recovered jewellery included gold chains, ear-rings, lockets, rings, etc, which were estimated to be worth Rs 1 lakh. Senior police officers also announced a cash reward for the team that solved the case and arrested Anwar.
