Jewellery shop loot, murder: Four arrested

Pune The police on Saturday nailed the four accused in the eight-year-old daylight loot and murder case at a jewelery shop located on Sinhagad Road. Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Rakesh Wanvadi has granted police custody to the accused till March 12.

The arrested are — Shekhar Shrinivas Shettiyar (28), a resident of Kurla in Mumbai, Rakesh Singh, Ajay alias Doctor and Ashok Mishra but two other accused friends of Mishra are yet to be arrested.

According to the police, on July 26, 2001, two people alighted from an Indica car and entered Pednekar Jewellery shop. They asked the sales staff to show some chains. Soon, four more people entered the shop. They threatened manager Nilesh Pednekar (22) and hit him on the head with a gun. They looted gold and silver jewellery worth Rs. 3.17 lakh from the shop. Before fleeing, one of the accused fired rounds which killed Nathibai Venaram Chaudary (35) and Raju Uttam Sagle (30) who were inside the shop.

The Mumbai crime branch had arrested the accused in connection with some other crime. During the interrogation, the accused mentioned of their loot in Pune and the killing of one person. Following this, they were handed over to the Haveli police.

The looted jewellery and the guns used for the crime are yet to be recovered. It has been revealed that the accused have committed many other crimes of serious nature in Pune, Mumbai and Thane.
