Mumbai The JJ Flyover in south Mumbai had to be closed for traffic for several hours on Wednesday following information by the Byculla Fire Brigade about some vibrations emanating from the flyover.

The traffic police blocked the flyover by barricading both sides of the flyover. According to the BMC’s disaster management control room, they had also received a call from a resident around 2 am informing them about vibrations at the JJ flyover.

However, Fire Brigade, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and BMC officials carried out a joint inspection of the flyover and declared it safe for traffic after which the barricades were removed.

An official from the Mumbai Traffic control said, “We had received the information early on Wednesday about some vibrations at the flyover. To avoid any mishap, we barricaded the flyover on both ends.” After the barricading, a team of MSRDC officials visited the spot to conduct an inspection of the flyover.

When contacted, Suhas Sabnis, Chief Engineer, MSRDC said, “A rubber drain under the expansion joint had come off and therefore people panicked.”

BMC Chief Engineer, Roads, D S Ghorpade said that MSRDC is responsible for maintenance of the flyover. However, after a joint inspection it was found that the rubber filling of the flyover had come off. “There is no need to worry. The flyover is in fine condition,” he said.
