Lucknow, March 4 Ghazipur police arrested Virendra Rai, who was wanted in connection with Mumbai’s J J Hospital shootout case of 1992, on Tuesday.

Rai, who was dismissed from his job of a police sub-inspector of UP Police, was among the 41 accused against whom Mumbai police had chargesheeted in connection with the case. Rai, absconding since 1992, is alleged to be a close relative of former Union minister Kalpnath Rai.

Ghazipur SP Pritinder Singh said, “Rai is originally a resident of Azamgarh. But currently he was staying in Ghazipur.”

Sources said the Mumbai police had contacted Uttar Pradesh Police seeking its help for arresting Rai. The Tada Court had issued a non-bailable warrant against Rai under sections 143, 144, 146, 148, 149, 302, 307, 332, 506, 452, 120, 201, 202, 203, 204, 212 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code, besides sections 3, 5, 6 of the TADA Act.

The court has already convicted three persons — Subhash Thakur, Shyam Kumar Garika Pati and Jayant Surya Rao — in connection with the same case. The shootout was allegedly the result of gang war between Dawood Ibrahim and Arun Gawali.
