A total of 65 students have proposed such designs, each with a recommended site. Once the college finds a sponsor, one of the memorials will be set up at the proposed site.

“The students came up with the idea of designing a memorial. By mid-February, we will have chosen one design and also found sponsors for it. We are in talks with civic activists and NGOs,” principal Rajeev Mishra said.

From the 65 designs, 36 were selected initially. On Thursday, three were short-listed for final selection.

Of the finalists, Darshan Mharu wants his memorial to be built at the southern exit of the CST. “It will be a great honour to see a memorial designed by one of us installed in the city. During selection, costs and location availability were taken into consideration. I think my design fits all the criteria.”

Komal Poddar’s design comprises an island near Nariman Point. “The island has eight folds depicting our hollow system crippled with weak fundamentals, the very aspects that led to the attacks.”

Vaama Joshi, the third finalist, wants her memorial designed on an island too, off the Gateway of India. She wants it placed so that it can be seen through the arch of the Gateway.

The designs are on public display at Claude Battley Hall on the JJ Campus.

The students got tips on design concepts from Tineke Van Veen, a public display artist from Holland. Last week, she held workshops on the concepts involved in designing memorials. “This is the first time we are designing memorials, which is an important subject of architectural study besides the regular structures that we are usually asked to design. During the workshop, Veen asked us to keep in mind what we felt for the city,” said Apurva Shenvi, one of the participants.
