The impact of the global slump has not hit job opportunities in the medical profession as badly as it has affected other professions. This was stated by Dr S S Gill, Vice-Chancellor, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences here on Sunday.
Dr Gill said though recession has not left the profession unaffected, the situation is better than other professions. He was speaking to mediapersons after the 47th annual convocation of Khalsa College for Women.
When asked about the US decision to stop hiring nurses from India, he said, “USA is going through the worst impact of recession and therefore the demand for nurses has become less. This has impacted the job prospects of the nursing professionals but overall the situation is not as bad as it is in the other professions.”
Commenting on the decreasing number of applicants in medical examinations year after year, he admitted the inclination towards the medical field had gone down over the years due to more popularity of courses in commerce and business administration.
“Fields like commerce are emerging as hot favourites with parents as well as students and therefore the inclination towards the medical profession has shrunk over the years,” he replied to a question.
Speaking about regular complaints from nursing students about the lack of facilities in colleges, he admitted some colleges were not performing expectedly, adding they would be inspected and asked to provide good facilities to students. “Some colleges are doing very well, some are average while there are a few which fall below expectations. We will make sure the students do not bear the brunt.” As many as 749 graduates and 159 post-graduates were awarded degrees.
