Joshi abduction: two sentenced to life

Chandigarh A local court, on Tuesday, sentenced Jagminder Singh and Honey Sharma to life imprisonment for kidnapping Nikhil Joshi, son of a prominent car dealer, in 2005. The court had held them guilty of the crime on January 8.

Additional District and Session judge R S Attri announced the sentence.

Nikhil is the son of Deepak Joshi, owner of Joshi Auto Zone.

Nikhil, then a student of DAV College in Sector 10, was abducted on November 18, 2005.

A caller, claiming to be part of the Chota Rajan gang, demanded a ransom of Rs 2 crore from his father.

Kumar and Sharma were nabbed when police raided a Sector-16 house, located using details of their cellphones.

Nikhil was found handcuffed in the house from where the police also recovered two pistols.

During interrogation, the duo named one Aman Sharma as the mastermind behind the kidnapping.

The police launched a search operation and nabbed him and also recovered the car used in the abduction.

They also found that Aman Sharma’s real name was Jagwinder Singh. After Nikhil identified him, he was arrested as well.

During the trial of the case, however, Kumar fled from the Patiala Jail was later declared a ‘proclaimed offender’.

Arguing for the prosecution, Vinay Jhingal said the mobile phones from which the calls were made for ransom were in the name of Aman Sharma and the form filled for taking the connection had the photo of one Gurminder.

Criminal history
A frequent offender, Jagwinder Singh, was earlier booked for murdering one Gurmeet Sehgal in June 2001. While a murder case was registered against him in the Vasant Kunj police station at New Delhi, the trial is still on. In another case, Jagwinder faces charges of murdering one Vikramjit Singh for which a case was registered against him in June 2006 at Barog, Himachal Pradesh.

Apart from being allegedly involved in another kidnapping case of one Amit Goria, Jagwinder also has as many as 22 cases registered against him on charges of theft, robbery and forgery in cities like Delhi, Ludhiana, Bathinda and Noida among others. Honey Sharma also has several cases of motor vehicle thefts registered against him in various cities
