In an executive council meeting on Wednesday, the university came out with the specific punishments for three set of students involved in ragging a girl student of the architecture department in July 2008.

Twenty-eight students were found guilty of ragging while 20 students were indirectly involved in the act, five ex-students and three present students were directly involved.

“The 20 students, who were indirectly involved, will have to bring their guardians and we have issued a warning letter to the students,” said Parthapratim Biswas, a senior exceutive council member of the university.

The warning letter states that in case of any further mischief the university will take stern action against the students. After the ex-students pay the fine amount they will be given their certificates, which the university has withheld after the act came to light.

“The provision of imposing a fine is mentioned in the Supreme Court directions on ragging and the university has acted as per the guidelines,” said Siddharth Datta, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the university.

The university has shown some consideration with the students who were found guilty of the act directly. Earlier, the university had decided an academic suspension for the three students for four semesters. In the meeting, however, the university decided to reduce the suspension to three semesters.

Senior officials said the university has taken the final decision after giving adequate time to the guilty students to represent themselves before the university.
