The delay made the affected families to make another representation to the concerned authorities on Friday, albeit in a different way. A delegation of 15 victims — representing 262 people injured in the blasts — distributed roses at the Ahmedabad Collectorate as well as the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) office to expedite the payment process. The Centre had announced a compensation of Rs 50,000 to each of the “seriously” injured.
Shailesh Patel, president, Asarwa Youth Circle, who accompanied the victims, said: “Along with the roses, we have submitted a memorandum to the GPCC president with the hope to get some help from here, as the Central government is being headed by the Congress.”
Manubhai Thakore, one of the victims, said, “I hope something will soon be done about the compensation. We have approached everyone and tried everything right from representations to regular follow-ups.”
The district authorities said the delay has been there as they finalised and sent the list of seriously injured victims to the Centre recently. Ahmedabad city Mamlatdar Mamta Sojitra said although the list has been sent, they have no idea as to when the money will come. The list has 68 names, but the victims have not been communicated about who all have been left out.
Sojitra had said two months ago that the list was being prepared and that it ‘would be sent to the Centre in a few days’, though they were not sure about the definition of the term ‘seriously injured’. Unwant Oza, Director of Relief, said, “After the Centre clarified the definition of ‘seriously injured’ we sent the list. I have no idea when the compensation will be released.”
The list has been prepared and forwarded by the city mamlatdar. But ironically, Sojitra could not confirm the exact date when the list was sent, while the district collector expressed ignorance of the development.
District Collector Harit Shukla said: “We had all data about the injured people, as we had cleared the state government compensation. But you will have to get it verified as to whether the data has been communicated to the Centre. It is not our responsibility.”
Most of the victims have pinned their hopes on the compensation amount to clear dues. While many had borrowed money to meet their daily expenses, as they were advised to stay away from work to recuperate, there are a few who are unable to return to work given the nature of their injury.
