Junagadh The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Friday evening caught the Junagadh District Registrar (co-operative societies), Vipul Mehta, red-handed, while he was accepting a bribe of

Rs 25,000 from renowned Junagadh-based doctor Bharat Koyani.

According to the ACB, Dr Koyani had purchased an old house at the Nehru Park Society near the bus station and had rented out the house to a photo laboratory for commercial use. Members of the society, however, objected to this and approached the society’s committee.

The committee asked Dr Koyani to stop the commercial use of the property, following which Dr Koyani approached the district registrar and pleaded for the dismissal of the committee. He said the committee was not functioning in accordance with the rules and regulations.

Mehta demanded a bribe of Rs 1 lakh, and after negotiation, the amount was settled at Rs 50,000. A sum of Rs 25,000 was paid on December 17, 2008, with the remainder to be paid on January 30.

Dr Koyani later lodged a complaint against Mehta with the ACB, on the basis of which deputy SP, ACB, K S Parmar set up a trap. An ACB official said, in order to ensure that the trap was a success, a button camera was placed on the person of one of the accomplices of Dr Koyani and the entire episode was recorded.

The ACB has now registered an offence against Mehta under Sections 7, 13-1 (A) of the Anti-Corruption Law and will place a charge-sheet in the Sessions Court against him. Mehta will also be produced before the court. No arrests have been made though as such offences are subject to a trial in the Sessions Court.
