Junior tennis: Bibaswan, Treta win

Kolkata Bibaswan Deb and Treta Bhattacharyya made it to the pre quarter-finals of the ONGC ITF Junior Tennis 2009 being played at the DKS Sports Complex here.

Today, Treta took 115 minutes to beat Russia’s Natela Dzalamidze 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. In the first set Dzalamidze broke Treta in the fifth, seventh and ninth game and was broken in the second and sixth game. The second set also saw a series of breaks. Treta was broken in the first game and broke Dzalamidze in the second, fourth and sixth game to take a 5-2 lead. Then she lost the momentum and was broken in the seventh and ninth game as the score got leveled at 5-5. Treta broke Dzalamidze in the 12th game to take the set. The final set was comparatively a one-sided affair as Treta broke Dzalamidze in the second, fourth and eighth game, while being broken in the seventh game.

Bibaswan walked into the pre quarter-finals beating Rohit Bisht in 90 minutes in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). In the first set, Bibaswan broke Bisht in the second and eighth game and was broken in the third. Bibaswan took the set at 6-3. In the second set, Bibaswan squandered four match points in the 10th game, still managed to win the set and the match.

Fourth seed Appanervanda Muddappa lost to wild card Venkat Iyer 5-7, 2-6 in the boys’ singles. The other seed to fall was sixth seed Uzbek Roman Piftor. Jayaprakash Mohit Mayur got the better of him 6-4, 6-2.

In the girls’ singles, the only seed to fall was third seed Rishika Sunkara. She lost to Prerna Bhambri in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Local girl Amrita Mukherjee, a wild card, was defeated in the first round by Sharon Sanchana Paul 6-1, 6-0.
