Chandigarh Watch what your child eats during the months of February and March! For, experts believe that the food a child consumes during examination days is of vital importance. With board examinations approaching, the experts suggest parents to keep a watchful eye on the diet of their children.

Talking to Newsline, Dr Madhu Arora, senior dietician, GMCH-32, said: “Examination phobia among students is common. Apart from the anxiety to score good marks, certain kinds of food also induce stress in a child. That is why we ask parents to increase healthy food items in their children’s diet.” She added that parents must ensure that the children don’t miss meals during long study hours.

According to the experts, junk food like burgers, cold drinks, potato chips is a complete no-no during examinations. “These food items are high on carbohydrates, which make one drowsy. Apart from reducing the power of concentration, junk food also affects a child’s efficiency to perform. Since such foods are easily available, children tend to binge on them and consume empty calories,” said Tinu B, a nutritionist.

During examinations, there is a reduction in physical activity as children devote long hours to studying. Hence, it becomes all the more important that they don’t eat calorie-laden food. “Children should be kept away from heavy meals and fried food. The trick is to give them small meals at frequent intervals. A home-made meal of daal, rice, curd, vegetables and chapati is the best option. A child’s diet should be a healthy mix of proteins and carbohydrates. Proteins make the child feel fuller for a long time and also increase concentration. Fresh fruits remain the best source of nutrients,” added Arora.

Children’s preferences for food must also be kept in mind. “Instead of forcing them not to consume a certain dish, parents should give children a healthy substitute of the same food,” she suggested.

Include these in your child’s diet
* Boiled eggs
* Milk or curd
* Fruits or fruit custard
* Nuts
* Plenty of water
