Shimla, February 1 Justice Jagdish Bhalla, who was appointed Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court by President Pratibha Patil, will be administered oath by Governor V.S. Kokje at the Raj Bhawan in Shimla tomorrow.

Bhalla, whose appointment as Chief Justice is shrouded in controversy over an alleged land deal in Uttar Pradesh involving his wife, is presently the acting Chief Justice of Chattisgarh High Court.

He succeeds Justice V. K. Gupta, who has now been transferred as Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court.

Today, Justice Bhalla arrived in Shimla with his wife Renu Bhalla and called upon Governor Kokje. Bhalla’s appointment as Chief Justice comes just five months after previous president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam raised objections over the decision of a Supreme Court collegium to promote him.
