Mumbai To create awareness about the role of the Parsi community in the development of different aspects of education in the 19th and 20th centuries in West India, the K R Cama Oriental Institute will be conducting a special educational seminar on January 17 and 18 at the Sir J J Modi memorial hall of the institute.

“The seminar will attempt to bring out the unique role played by the community in the field of education. Not only was the Parsi community the first to promote female education in the then Bombay, but it also undertook initiatives in setting up a number of schools and institutions for higher studies,” said Dr Nawaz Mody, seminar coordinator and joint honourary secretary.

According to Dr Mody, it was the Parsi Girl School Association that took up the task of educating children and set up schools. “Parsis were the first community which took up the task of educating girls in India. They also set up quality medical institutions. They have taken initiatives to impart religious education and set up libraries in the city,” said Mody.

“We have experts from the History department, University of Mumbai, the Indian Institue of Science, Bangalore and professors from TIFR and TISS to present the papers. The idea is to promote Parsi culture,” said Mody. The seminar will be inaugurated by Dr Armaity Desai, former chairperson of the University Grants Commission. Dr Ketayun Dinshaw, former director of the Tata Memorial Centre will also be addressing those present.
