Pune Even as Congress MP Suresh Kalmadi has started holding public rallies and two days ago visited some slums, the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has made it clear that the party is yet to decide on its candidate from Pune for the coming Lok Sabha elections and that any name will be finalised only after meeting with its political allies. However, on Thursday, Kalmadi embarked upon his Samvad Yatra, public reachout rallies and even took out a padyatra at slums around Dandekar Pul and shaking hands with the dwellers there. He also had enough supporters to accompany him — including city unit chief Abhay Chhajed, MLA Ramesh Bagwe, corporator Arun Dhimdhime and Prasanna Jagtap.

In his speech, Kalmadi thanked the slum-dwellers saying that a major chunk of votes came from them. “It was thanks to your support that I became an MP, which is why, I am giving priority to the development works in slums. I will focus on housing, water supply and other development works for slums,” Kalmadi said.

Meanwhile, he state Congress committee spokesperson Anant Gadgil has issued a press release clarifying that the party is yet to finalise its Lok Sabha candidate. For the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, we have just started holding talks with our political allies about seat sharing. Only after finalising the seat sharing will we decide on our candidate,: says the release.

It further states, “Before appointing a candidate for the polls, Congress has a tradition of appointing a parliamentary board. After that, the party high command takes a decision on that. But the party is yet to start work on that front.”

Alluding to Kalmadi, the letter says, “Despite this, some people have started holding public rallies, which has confused the party workers. Many party workers have pointed this out to us. Hence, it was necessary to make things clear.”
