Kolkata Under fire from ally Forward Bloc for his party’s high-handedness in the dealing with junior partners in the ruling Left Front in West Bengal, CPM general secretary Prakash Karat today sought to douse the flame at the Bloc’s 16th all India Congress by raising the nuclear deal issue at the forum that was called to discuss alternatives for the Left in the state.

Addressing the seminar on its second day, Karat urged all political parties to unite and oppose the proposed Nuclear End Use Bill brought by the UPA government that has already been cleared by the Union cabinet. The Bill, Karat said, is aimed at clearing the nuclear reactor suppliers like the US, France and Russia of liabilities arising out of any mishap in future.

“We have the draft bill with us. The government wants a law. In the event of any accident, the law will clear the supplier of any liability towards compensation for the victims. I appeal to all parties to resist the Bill once it is placed in Parliament,” the CPM leader said.

CPI general secretary A B Bardhan and Bloc’s general secretary Debabrata Biswas also spoke today at the seminar in which all national leaders of the Left are invitees.

“Congress thinks it can get away with anything and the BJP is in crisis. If the Left can intervene in the situation with people’s issues, things can still change,” said Karat, mentioning the price rise. The prime minister, he said, had claimed the prices will come down once slashed in the global market. “This is factually wrong. Prices in the world markets have already come down, but in our country it is spiraling constantly,” he added.

Bardhan blamed the Centre’s policies for the economic crisis. “The Left Front is fighting vigorously against the price rise of essential food items and against the Centre’s policies that led to economic crisis. The state government is striving to create new jobs for youth by undertaking industrial and agricultural growth. A lot more is yet to be done and of course can be done,” he said.
