Karnataka cops in town to grill suspect

Pune A Karnataka Police team is in Pune to interrogate suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) member Hussain Shabbir Nairuddin Gangavali, arrested by the Pune unit of the state ATS on Tuesday for alleged involvement in the Bangalore blasts.

Senior officers of the ATS, Karnataka police and intelligence agencies are investigating his links with IM founder Riyaz Bhatkal and his brother Iqbal Bhatkal, who allegedly masterminded serial blasts in various parts of the country.

A team headed by Joint Commissioner (crime) Gopal Hoshur of the Bangalore police reached Pune on Thursday for interrogating Gangavali, who is in the custody of the state ATS. Hoshur was not available for comment.

Gangavali, a native of Bhatkal village in Karnataka, was held in a mosque in Janwadi area located off Senapati Bapat Road. The ATS team also seized counterfeit notes worth Rs 25,000 from his possession. Gangavali was remanded to police custody till January 12.

Police suspect that Gangavali had provided shelter to Iqbal Bhatkal. When asked if Bhatkal had stayed over and held meetings with IM members in Pune with the help of Gangavali, inspector Peter Lobo of the ATS said, “Investigations are on. We cannot tell anything more now.”
