Vadodara, January 11 The tribal dominated area around the Sardar Sarovar Dam at Kevadia is all set to get the urban touch, with the state government deciding to set up Kevadia Area Development Authority (KADA) in Narmada district for its development.

The setting up of KADA envisages providing infrastructure facilities and employment opportunities in the 16 villages affected by the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL) project in the district, and also to develop it as a tourist spot. According to SSNNL authorities, the KADA office is expected to be set up by April-2008. The state urban development authority has allocated around Rs 25 lakhs to SSNNL to conduct a survey in the villages.

PK Lahiri, Chairman and Managing Director of SSNNL, said, "We will have a staff of town planners who would survey the villages to take suggestions from the villagers," adding, "There are 11 villages on the right side of Narmada River and five on the left which would be covered under KADA."

He further said, "The aim is to provide primary education as well as generate employment in these villages, which are dominated by tribals." Pointing out that this area has a lot of potential for tourism, Lahiri said, "It is also adjoining Rajpipla which is becoming a famous destination for shooting of regional films."

R M Khant, Kevadia colony officer and KADA Chief Executive Officer in-charge, said, "We intend to develop the (KADA) office by April, 2008 and a staff of over 29 people would be required. There are some primary initiatives that we are taking right now." He added that to conduct the survey, they would initially take technical advice from Vadodara Urban Development Authority experts.

Khant said, "We are aware of heavy migration of the youth in the tribal villages due to the lack of employment opportunities. This is why we would also seek suggestions from the locals about the development plans in their villages." The main emphasis would be on constructing roads, primary schools and hospitals for the people affected by the SSNNL project.
