Mumbai, February 3 Countering last week’s accusation by residents, the Khar Gymkhana’s managing committee and trustees on Sunday stated that their open ground has always been accessible to the public, and that they only occasionally sub-let their tennis court — leased by the Collector’s office — for marriages and parties.

Stating that the accusation of the Khar Residents' Association (KRA) is an attack on their integrity, Bunty Chedda, a representative of the gym, said: “Our gym has two lease agreements, one with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and one with the Collector. The BMC ground, which has its entrance on 15th Road, is open for common public and we have not carried out any construction nor allowed any parties or commercial activities here.”

The tennis courts are on Collector’s land, for which the lease has been renewed till 2015, the committee members said. Members of the KRA said, however, that that a few years ago, in a hearing held with the earlier collector, a Government Resolution of 2004 was cited according to which all gyms can hold functions within their premises with written permission and after a payment of Rs 50,000 to the Collector’s office. “The government also demanded permission from the authorities before holding any private function in the premises,” said KRA’s Bindu Tandon at the meet organised by the Gym.
