Khare, Miyajiwala emerge winners

Pune Ranjeet Ravindra Khare, class 8 student from Loyola High School and Alefiya Miyajiwala, class 7 student from Sardar Dastoor Noshirwan won the 'HDFC Standard Life Spell Bee - India Spells 2009', Pune region.

Ranjeet and Alefiya will represent the city at the zonal rounds to be held in Mumbai, which will be followed by the Grand Finale on March 28. The winner of the Grand Finale would be sent to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, to witness and experience Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington on May 26 and 27.

More than 400 students from 52 schools participated in the contest held here on Friday. The contest is be conducted in schools across 11 cities including Delhi, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai for students of classes 6, 7, 8 and 9.

The exercise in the city rounds involved usage of various methods to test students on spellings, offering proper and repeated pronouncing of each word as well as its etymology.

"The contest aims to help students improve spellings skills, vocabulary, learning concepts, and pronunciations leading to correct usage of english words that will help in their early years of growth and development," said Sanjay Tripathy, executive vice president and head, marketing, HDFC Standard Life.
