Tanmoy Das (22), a resident of Kalna, was arrested from the Banerjee Para Lane in the Thakurpukur area. Following leads, Subhojit Biswas (32) too was nabbed.

With the recent arrests, the number of those arrested so far in the kidney racket has reached eight.

Interrogation of the two persons has revealed that they were in the business of kidney transplant for more than two years now and had dealt in 10 cases of transplantation. “Three of the 10 cases were done in Delhi and Chennai,” said a senior police officer.

During the interrogation, Das revealed the name of another associate who helped in the organ trade. “The police team then rushed to Palta and arrested Biswas from his residence in Shaktinagar area at 11 pm,” said Jawed Shamim, Deputy Commissioner of the Detective Department.

Interrogation of Das revealed he was a close ally of the suspected kingpin Manik Chowdhury alias Partha, who is based out of Delhi. Police sources have revealed that Das used to visit Delhi frequently, where he went with details of donors and sometimes came back with details of people who were in need of kidneys and admitted in various hospitals in Delhi. “He was like a tout who fixed the deals and was the main liaison between Kolkata and Delhi. We will interrogate him to know more on the Delhi angle and find leads on Partha,” said a senior police officer.

Earlier, the arrest of one Chandana Mukerjee had led to the seizure of fake medical certificates and other incriminating documents from her residence. Among the documents recovered were a few relating to organ transplant from New Delhi’s Ganga Ram Hospital. Biswas, on the other hand, was the man in Kolkata who managed the donors who usually came from underprivileged backgrounds.

“He also worked in close coordination with Partha and was in charge of bringing them from their homes, admitting them and taking care of their needs after the operation,” an official said. Biswas also fixed the rates of the organs with the donors. According to sources, prices ranged between Rs 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh.

The racket came to light on February 2 after Suman Rudra was admitted to the super-speciality hospital in Kolkata for a series of tests.

An unemployed youth residing in Shyamnagar, North 24-Parganas, he had been promised a job in Kolkata by his neighbour Mithun Chatterjee and brought to the city last week. Rudra became suspicious after the hospital staff began conducting a series of complicated tests on him.

When he inquired why they were being carried out, he was told that the tests were to ascertain if his kidneys were healthy enough for donation. Following this he raised an alarm.

No arrests in fraud IT firm case
Two days after nearly 200 new recruits were allegedly duped by an IT company, INFOGEN Global, the police have not been able to make any arrest. The trainees of the company had filed an FIR with Bidhannagar East police station on Tuesday against chief visionary of the company Anirban Ghosh and his management for criminal breach of trust and fraud.
