“We wanted to install cameras in the arcade of the Hotel from where we will be able to monitor the main entrance to the hotel,” said a security official of the hotel. Six of the eight outdoor kiosks — belonging to an outdoor advertising firm Prithvi Associates and were installed in 2006 — are blocking the view of the cameras. The Hotel authorities now want the eight kiosks to be removed. But the advertiser is not at all willing to relocate and instead want to increase the height of the kiosks so that the view of the cameras do not get obstructed.
“We have a contract with the KMC for putting up kiosks. There is no question of removing the kiosks,” said Dipankar Bose of Prithvi Associates. “We can increase the height after we get a written order from the KMC. We have not received any such order,” he added.
The KMC, which earns Rs 1.68 crore annually from the entire contract with Prithvi Associates, has not been able to resolve this problem. “We cannot just ask them to remove the kiosks as we have awarded the contract to them. But since there is a security issue involved, we are looking at the other options,” said KMC Advertisement Manager Debashish Sen.
