Kirloskar foundation announces contest to judge ‘cleanest’ PMC school

Pune Kirloskar Foundation started by Late Shantanurao Kirloskar is all set to expand its 40-year-old competition of ‘clean and beautiful school’ by introducing a similar contest in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) schools with a focus on clean water, sanitation and hygienic conditions in the school.

Vijay Naik, secretary and treasurer of the foundation said, “Till now, we evaluated the schools based on their overall cleanliness. In the process, we found that most schools lacked the infrastructure for clan toilets, clean and adequate drinking water and so on.” In order to improve these facilities, the foundation is planning to start a pilot project in few PMC schools with a focus on ensuring clean and adequate drinking water and having sanitation and hygiene infrastructure in place, he added.

Kirloskar Foundation declared the results of ‘clean and beautiful school competition’ for the year 2008-09 in which 33 schools from seven categories have won various prizes.

Winners from PMC and Developing Schools are Inter-Vida Utkarsha Shikshan Kendra, Viman Nagar (first prize), the winner of second category of the school from regional language is Abhinav Vidyalaya Highschool Marathi Medium, Erandwane.

The first prize of the third category, which is English-medium schools from Pune city, is Mt. Carmel Convent Highschool, Lullanagar, while in the fourth category of schools from rural area of Haveli, the winner is Late Bandoji Khandoji Chavan Madhyamik Vidyalaya,Dhayarigaon.

The School from rural area of Purandar Taluka, Jijamata Highschool, Jejuri won the first prize, while Shirur Taluka Vidya Vikas Mandir Karandi also won the first prize for the second time. The winner from Wai Taluka is Rajendra Uccha Madhyamik Vidyalaya, Khandala. Special recognitions are given to Vidya Vikas Mandir, Karandi, Smt Babaitai Takalkar Madhyamik Ashram Shala, Nimgaon-Mhalungi, Jijamata Highschool, Jejuri, Madhyamik Vidyalaya, Khanapur and Matoshri Jijai Sopanrao Jadhav Madhyamik Vidyalaya, Sakurde for the nest cleanliness related social project.

Three prizes were given to the schools winning the first, second and the third positions with prize money of Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000 respectively.
