Kolkata The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has appointed a committee to probe into the termination of the contract that was awarded to APS Michigan for upgrading brick sewer lines of Kolkata under the JNNURM project.

The one-member committee will be headed by Sushit Kumar Biswas, Project Director of Kolkata Environment Improvement Trust (KEIP).

The contract was terminated by the previous Left Front-run civic body on January 27 after the company missed several deadlines. The pending work of the project was then shifted to two other firms — Angel Liner and Michael Beu — which were already involved under other JNNURM projects.

“The contract to APS Michigan was terminated suddenly. The committee has been formed to find out whether proper procedures were followed while taking that step,” said Mayor Sovan Chatterjee in Kolkata on Thursday.

The new Trinamool board that came to power in May has issued fresh tenders for the project. Chatterjee said the Advocate General, who had ordered retendering the project, had asked for his opinion on the matter, and this led him to set up the probe committee.
