Kolkata A Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) worker died and another critically injured after a bus on route 288 rammed the wall of the National Library near gate number 2 on Thursday. The incident occurred around 6:40 am on Belvedere Road.

The 35-year-old KMC employee, Rajkumar Paswan was hit by a speeding private bus when it ran on the pavement and rammed a lamp post at Alipore. While Rajkumar was declared brought dead at the hospital, 25-year-old Gyan Paswan is undergoing treatment for serious injuries at a city hospital.

The bus driver, who was later arrested, claimed it was a mechanical fault.

Both Rajkumar and Gyan were walking along the pavement when they were hit. Eye-witnesses said Rajkumar was crushed under the front wheels of the bus, which then hit Gyan.

“There were a few passengers in the bus, one of which was injured. The police took him to hospital,” said Prakash Singh, a local shop-owner who witnessed the accident.

The deceased lived in the KMC quarters on Belvedere Road.

Locals detained Ram Ray (38), the driver of the bus, and later handed him over to Alipore police station. Ray is a resident of Bansdroni in south Kolkata.

“Police are conducting a mechanical test of the bus to confirm the cause of the accident,” said Pradip Chatterjee, Joint Commissioner of Police (administration).
