Kolkata The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has taken up a Rs 305-crore project under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) to replace worn out water supply pipelines in the city.

The foundation stone of the project was laid by Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya on Friday. Areas of north, central and south Kolkata with pumping stations at Tala, Bagmari, Mohammad Ali Park, Raja Subodh Mullick Square, Auckland Square, Park Circus and Kasba will benefit from the project.

The project involves laying a 64 inch pipeline over 23-km stretch from Tala to Palta, passing along the Park Side Road and BT Road. The pipeline will have a filter water transmission capacity of 94 million gallons per day.

“Old pipelines are completely damaged and can go defunct any day. So the pipelines will have to be changed,” said Alapan Banerjee, Municipal Commissioner.

“Since we could not arrange the funds, we were not able to change the lines. However, after we convinced the Centre about the damaged pipelines, it approved the project under the JNNURM scheme. The project will be completed in 30 months,” added Banerjee.

Thirty-five per cent of the project cost will be borne by the Centre, 35 per cent by the state and rest by the KMC.
