Ludhiana, February 13 Celebrating Valentine’s Day is in vogue. Like every year, youngsters can be seen queuing in various shops to buy that perfect gift for their valentine irrespective of what their parents feel.

Newsline spoke to some parents and discovered that though most of them were not against the day, they don’t approve of the way people celebrate love now.

Deepak Anand, a father of three says, “I am not against celebrating Valentine’s Day. It’s just an awkward show of vulgarity that I don’t approve of. Besides, many don’t even know the importance of the day. I feel it should celebrated with the whole family.”

Satinder Singh, a medicine manufacturer and a father of two says, “To celebrate Valentine’s Day is not a part of the Indian culture. The young people often feel alone when they don’t have anyone beside their side for the day. And to have someone only for Valentine’s Day leaves a wrong message on the young minds.”

Dr Kiran Grover, a mother of two young boys says, “It’s a sheer wastage of time and money to celebrate the day in the name of love. The youngsters celebrate it without even understanding the whole message behind it.”

For Kavita and Rohan Bajaj, parents of two college-going kids, the day is all about keeping it open.

“We used to see our children buy gifts for their friends every year. From last year, we started purchasing gifts for their friends and converted the day into a sort of family get-together. We feel that should be transparency in such relations because at this age children don’t understand love and often fall to infatuation. So to avoid any conflict in the young minds, it’s better to celebrate the day at a family level.”

Let’s bring a smile on faces today

Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle will celebrate Valentine’s Day at the Bal Bhawan with hearing and speech impaired children among others. “We celebrate hola mohalla where sports and positive thinking is stressed against drugs and hooliganism. Similarly, we will celebrate Valentine’s Day which symbolises love for mankind. It will be a way to bring a smile on the faces of these children and encourage an atmosphere of peace and love,” said Satnam Singh Sallopuri, Director, Youth Services and Komaljeet Singh General Secretary of Students Wing.
