Mumbai With 130 beds in its intensive care unit, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital (KDAH) and medical research institute in Andheri has the distinction of having the largest number of critical care beds in Mumbai.

The hospital also has the largest Operation Theatre (OT) complex in the city with 20 OTs.

The 19-floor hospital spread over 10 lakh sq ft, located in the posh Four Bungalows area of Andheri, was inaugurated on Monday by Chief Minister Ashok Chavan in the presence of the chief of Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group Anil Ambani, his mother Kokilaben and close friend Amitabh Bachchan.

However, the hospital has been open for patients since December. The hospital also has many firsts to its name — both in the city as well as the country—redefining health care with innovative patient care modules and newer technology.

With 730 beds, KDHA is an out and out private hospital, with over 100 outpatient departments. The unique selling point of the hospital is that specialised doctors are available here 24 hours as they are attached to Kokilaben hospital.

Over 140 doctors, 1,000 nurses and about 200 paramedics from different hospitals in Mumbai and from across the world are attached to the hospital.

“Full-time doctors are traditionally seen in big institutions globally. But here, physician and patient are in the same campus, which will help improve the quality of care given to the patient,” said a senior hospital official requesting anonymity.

He added, “Later, we will also start formal and informal teaching and training as we have great doctors, good infrastructure and research facility.” Speaking about the cost, the hospital doctors said: “The rates will definitely be competitive”. The most expensive suite in the hospital will cost about Rs 11,000 per day, a source said.

Hrithik: 1st star patient
The hospital had its first high-profile patient on the inaugural day. Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan was rushed in at around six in the evening.

“Hrithik hurt his arm while doing a stunt for his movie ‘Kites’.

He was breaking glass with a rod when a piece of glass hurt him at Filmistan.

It is a minor gash, nothing major,” said Tanujaa Ishis, his secretary. Hospital sources said he was rushed to the hospital for consultation.
