It’s a heady moment for designer Ritu Kumar. Her son Amrish Kumar, director of the Ritu Kumar Label, will be taking over the designing bastion from her. And this season of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week will get to see the work of both mom and son. “We will be introducing Amrish to the designer circuit with the fall-winter line. From then onwards, he will be in charge of the label,” said an ecstatic Ritu.

At the preview of their line on Thursday, the twosome’s involvement was distinct. While Ritu’s classical inclinations were still visible, it had a youthful infusion of abstracts as well. “There are a lot of dresses this time round. They can be worn individually or teamed with tights for a fun night out. The point is that no one really wears elaborate gowns anymore. So it’s important to create outfits that can be mixed and matched and are not over the top,” said Ritu. With three distinct lines in white, indigo and floral, the entire collection had a minimalist, modern look to it. While the white line has blended fabrics with hints of mirrorwork and embroidery to create a sort of reflective surface, the indigo line, flaunting the most Indian of colours, is less shimmery. It’s a different story altogether with the florals though, with a bright palette and practically no sheen. Watch the Kumars at the Week.
