Lucknow Labourers from Rajasthan working at the Ambedkar Memorial struck work and blocked traffic at Samta Mulak Crossing on Sunday and pelted stones on commuters after reports of damage to a statue of Bhimrao Ambedkar in Bharatpur district in Rajasthan.

Laborers blockaded the Gandhi Setu and Gomti Barrage, creating traffic chaos on other alternative routes in Gomti Nagar and Paper Mill Colony area. Traffic was restored after a few hours when a senior officer assured them they would contact officials in Rajasthan and ask them to take action against the culprits.

More than 9,000 labourers from Rajasthan are engaged in cutting and shaping of stones for various memorials under construction in the state capital. Over 2,000 of them working at the Ambedkar Memorial and Samta Mulak Crossing in Gomti Nagar blocked roads by scattering stones and bricks. They also chased commuters and pelted stones on their vehicles but no one was injured.

Laborers said they had been informed about the damage to Ambedkar’s statute by some people who had come from Bharatpur on Saturday night. The incident reportedly took place in Raipurva village in Bharatpur district.

Inspector General of Police, AK Jain, district magistrate Chandra Bhanu, SSP Akhil Kumar and a large contingent of police reached the spot. Police cordoned off the area and collected the labourers to talk to them after using mild force.
