Lalgarh under siege again

Kolkata Lalgarh and its adjoining blocks in West Midnapore again came under a siege as tribals, under the banner of Police Santras Birodhi Public Committee (PSBPC), launched the second phase of agitation in support of their 13-point demand on Saturday.

The district magistrate has called an all-party meeting to control the situation as development work undergoing in the block will be jeopardised by the agitation.

The PSBPC had begun its first phase of agitation on November 6, 2008 by blocking roads. It withdrew the agitation on December 7 when the district administration promised to accept the demands within 15 days. The demands include punishment for Lalgarh police officers, who allegedly tortured 11 adivasi women on November 5 night in the name of flushing out Maoists from their houses, public apology by the superintendent of police for atrocities and compensation of Rs 2 lakh to each of the affected women.

Chatardhar Mahato, PSBPC leader, however, alleged that instead of fulfilling their demands, the administration had been taking up development work in tribal areas to blunt their agitation. But this time their agitation, Mahato said, was mainly against police atrocities rather than poor development. The agitation will be taken to other districts unless their demands were met immediately, he said.
