Mumbai The interim railway budget presented by Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav may have little to offer to the suburban rail commuters of Mumbai, but those from the northern states settled in the city are a happy lot. The minister has linked the city better with north India by introducing more train services to and from Mumbai.

The Railway Minister on Friday announced seven outstation trains from Mumbai, of which six are superfast trains while three have been extended.

Of the seven new trains, one goes to Uttar Pradesh, the Mumbai-Varanasi superfast daily. The Mumbai-Jabalpur Garibrath has been extended to Allahabad.

The minister has also introduced the Mumbai-Jodhpur (bi-weekly) and the Mumbai-Bikaner superfast, both going to the north, while services of Mumbai-Vadodara and Mumbai-Jaipur Garibraths have been extended to Chhota Udaipur and New Delhi respectively. The south-bound Mumbai-Tirunelveli (bi-weekly)

and Mumbai-Machhalipattnam superfast (bi-weekly) trains were also announced by the minister in the interim budget.

Lalchand Yadav, employed with a private company and who hails from Jaunpur said, “I have been residing in Mumbai for the last 45 years. I feel there are less trains for Uttar Pradesh. The Godan Express which goes to Jaunpur is very crowded. Now I have a choice.

I can take the Mumbai-Varanasi Express to Janghai and from there it is a two-hour journey to Jaunpur. I can also take the Allahabad train and reach Jaunpur in another four hours.”

Devi Prasad, a contractor in Mumbai goes to Allahabad with his family every year. “This is first time the government has thought about people from Uttar Pradesh,” he said. Chitrasen Singh, president of the Uttar Bhartiya Western and Central Railway Yatri Sangarsh Samiti, said, “I want to congratulate the government on behalf of the people of UP for fulfilling our demands.”
