Kolkata High price of land at Rajarhat has come in the way of setting up of a small NSG hub there and the state government has been forced to move further to Madhyamgram, about 5 km from Dum Dum airport, to look for land for the hub. Rajarhat is just 1 km from the airport.

On Wednesday, a second NSG team arrived in the city — the first one had come in January — and it will be taken to Barrackpore on Thursday, where it will be shown a tract of 10,000 acres of defence land for a big hub to be built on the lines of its facility at Manesar in Haryana.

The NSG plans to set up two units in the state. The first one will be for training and a plot of about 12,000 acres will be required for this. The other will be a small unit on 25-30 acres of land, to be stationed for emergencies in eastern and north-eastern India .

The NSG wants this unit to be situated near the airport. “Land at Rajarhat comes at a premium. So we have moved to Madhyamgram and are looking for land there. On Thursday, we will take them to Barrackpore. If we could have identified the land at Madhyamgram, we would have shown it to them on Thursday itself,” said a senior Home Department official.
