Independent adaptation of ‘Macbeth’ in Malayalam thought-provoking

Jyotish MG’s adaptation of ‘Macbeth’ speaks a language of its own. The use of innovative theatrical techniques and excellent acting makes this adaptation of the classic a treat to watch. The play captures the attention of the audience as trauma of the Shakespeare’s tragic play unfolds on stage throughout.

The 65-minute play focuses on key incidents in the lives of the main characters —Macbeth, Lady Macbeth and Banquo. Realising that the audience would be well aware of the plot, the director has shifted stress on emotions and internal conflicts.

The portrayal of turbulent labyrinths of Macbeth’s mind has been effectively showcased by D Raghoothaman, the protagonist. The play also highlights the wavering nature and the conflicts Macbeth undergoes under the influence of evil and devious Lady Macbeth. Presence of witches, dressed in white and later in black were a sight to behold.

Again, the use of mirrors to reflect the tormented minds of characters reflects on the creative aspect of the team. The synchronised movement of actors, light effects and haunting music successfully adds a new dimension to the Shakespearean adaptation. Even the key monologues of the characters were so effectively portrayed, they managed to hold attention.

D Raghoothaman brilliantly essayed the role of Macbeth as did Athira LP of Lady Macbeth. Sreenivas as Banquo was good too.

The play was presented by Abhinaya Theatre.
