Kolkata Sanjay Smart, a teacher of La Martiniere for Boys, was arrested late on Monday night from Thakurpur. He was produced in Bankshal Court today and sent to police custody till May 28 by the court.

A complaint had been lodged against Smart by Partha Pratim Banerjee, father of Class IV student Srijan Banerjee, on April 2 at Shakespeare Sarani Police station. Banerjee alleged that the teacher had demanded a laptop from the student’s family to promote him to the next Class. As the family did not meet Smart’s demand, Srijan was not promoted to Class V, Banerjee alleged.

The parents of the student produced the text messages sent by the teacher in front of the police and said that the child was also denied a transfer certificate by the school.
