Pune City-Based Lavasa Corporation Ltd, developed by the Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), is all set to host Space World, a space edutainment centre which will be operational by 2010.

With a Rs 400 crore investment and technology inspired by United States Space and Rocket centre, Lavasa has entered into an agreement with Space Investment Co. LLC from the middle east to set up a 65-acre space centre at the hill station for a space like experience.

Chairman of Lavasa Corporation Ajit Gulabchand, who recently signed the MoU, said that with SIC as partners, the aim was to create SpaceWorld, which would be a first of its kind project in Asia, offering a space like experience to the visitors. “As India takes giant steps with its space exploration programme, we expect this project to provide a lifetime experience that will fascinate researchers, students, tourists both adults and children alike,” he said.

While chairman and CEO of Space Investment Co. LLC Ghazi A Al Ibrahim said that they chose the location due to its unique characteristics. “With a large number of top educational institutions setting up here, it is a perfect setting for the space centre. It will offer visitors a chance to learn about the galaxies and experience outer space dynamics through gravity rides and games as well as interactive aviation robotics and survival programmes,” he said. The centre will also have a space camp, an aviation camp, robotics, rocketry and X-Camp survival training, scuba, fun rides and a theatre in addition to a Space Mall and hotel at the centre. The centre will also host an entertainment area, space lectures by astronauts, simulation of missions that astronauts experience and live communication with the International Space station. Lavasa is being developed as a hill city in the city while SIC is the partner and licensee of the United States Space and Rocket Center (USSRC) that operates Space Workd Arabia in the UAE. The edutainment programmes for this project are prepared with inputs from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) representatives, educators, veteran astronauts and scientists with active assistance from USSRC’s space management experience. The centre is also looking at offering courses primarily aimed at new technologies and space browsing to help understand aerospace science in an entertaining way.
