Vadodara, February 22 The ripples of the recent backlash against the non-Marathi population in Maharashtra has reached Gujarat with a Vadodara-based lawyer, Dharmendra Singh, filing a petition against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray in the court of law.

Singh filed the petition at Vadodara Chief Judicial Magistrate's court on February 20, alleging that Thackeray had violated the constitutional guarantee of a person's fundamental rights by causing damage to the national fabric.

He has charged the politician with violation of Sections 153 a, 153 a, 117, 157 and others of the Indian Penal Code for instigating parochial aspirations to gain political mileage. The lawyer along with several residents of the Makarpura locality also staged a protest in the locality urging the residents to be united.

"In India, everyone has the right to go and work in any part of the nation unless prevented by special constitutional changes applicable in certain states. But just for petty political gain, Thakeray has not only harmed people's livelihoods but has also dented the feeling of national unity." Hoping that the judiciary would take appropriate action against Thakeray and other MNS activists, he added, "Thakeray has been served with a 30-day notice to come and appear in the Vadodara District court."

Singh and Makarpura residents belonging to other states of the country said they were shocked when they saw the MNS workers beating up north Indians in Maharashtra.

"In Makarpura, there are people from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar and West Bengal who stay in a very amiable way with the local population. They contribute towards the betterment of the Gujarati society. But if people like Thackeray continue to roam around freely in this country, it will be difficult to maintain the national unity," said Singh.
