Kolkata The Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court, Justice J N Patel, on Saturday said lawyers should be more responsible and restrain from boycotts in the interest of litigants.

“Working hours are lost in every court of the state due to these problems or owing to demise of lawyers and precious time is lost leaving the litigants harassed,” Justice Patel said at the inauguration of a seminar ‘For a better understanding’ organised by the Bar Council of West Bengal. “If litigants do not get justice in time due to such causes it is only the criminals and anti-socials who will feel encouraged,” he said.

Justice Patel sought cooperation of the advocates of all courts, including Calcutta High Court, in the state in running the courts and providing relief to litigants. Advocate General Balai Roy, while admitting that these problems existed, said a large number of vacancies in the High Court and district courts were leading to piling up of cases.
