Referring to the strike as a success, N K Nanda, president, Chandigarh District Bar Association said: “Our aim was not to harass the people but to give the government a signal not to make any amendments. The lawyers will join work from tomorrow.”

Bar associations across the country have called a nation-wide strike on February 3.

According to the proposed amendments, trial of rape cases should preferably be completed within two months. Moreover, to ensure a speedy trial, the court shall not adjourn the case on grounds of the lawyer’s engagement in another court or his inability to attend court due to an illness.

Also, no arrest would be required for cognisable offences such as molestation, dowry harassment and attempt to robbery, which invites a maximum punishment of up to seven years imprisonment.
