Laxman in joint lead with Areshchenko

Gurgaon In yet another good day for the Indians at the Gurgaon International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament, International Master RR Laxman joined top seed Alexander Areshchenko of Ukraine in the lead with 7 points. Laxman outwitted Ukrainian Grandmaster Yuri Solodovnichenko in the eighth round on Tuesday. Overnight leader Areshchenko settled for a draw against country mate and second seed Yuriy Kuzubov in only 4 moves.

Laxman sealed the game in 48 moves. He began with a Ruy Lopez opening and gained a minor advantage on the 34th move, before winning the encounter.

On the third board, Grandmaster Neelotpal Das and International Master Deep Sengupta drew to share the second spot with 6.5 points each with Yuriy Kuzubov of Ukraine, Uzbek Saidali Iuldachev, Russian GM Mikhail Ulibin and Anwesh Upadhyaya.

Meanwhile, former National champion Abhijit Kunte drew with International Master Himanshu Sharma. National ‘B’ champion International Master B Adhiban suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Tajikistan Fide Master Djuraev Sokhib. Among other Indians in the fray, P Magesh Chandran settled for a draw against Soumya Swaminathan while Praveen Thipsay defeated Sahaj Grover in their eighth-round matches.
